Santa Maria is a U.S.owned company established to build and operate state-of-the-art container ships for U.S. domestic service. The company is planning a bi-monthly service between California and Barbers Point, Hawaii so as to provide competitively priced service to Hawaii shippers.

Santa Maria estimates that it will save Hawaii shippers as much as $15,000 a year in freight rates for a customer shipping just one container on each westbound sailing.

Introducing Trucking by Water in California and the United States

A Santa Maria Group presentation on how a parcel of land at the Mare Island Navy Shipyard can be economically converted to a modern US ship assembly plant - land under negotiation today.

  • California's New I-5 Seaway
  • 6,000 containerized truckloads by water per day
  • Less fuel pollution and less fuel consumption
  • Reduced road congestion
  • Taxpayer savings

Lower shipping rates on the horizon?

The rise in ocean freight rates was driven partly by declining growth in Hawaii's economy. However, even before economic problems arose, shippers were complaining that local rates were high compared with those in other parts of the world. Some have called for abolishing the Jones Act, federal legislation requiring that domestic waterborne freight be carried on U.S. owned, U.S. built, and U.S. manned vessels. Those critics would like to see the law changed to allow foreign carriers to compete with Matson and CSX Lines (leaders in the Hawaii trade), resulting in lower freight costs. There may be some light at the end of the tunnel.
